New Chicago Residency

We’re excited to announce that we’ll be starting up a 3 month long series of shows at the Shrine (2109 S. Wabash St.) in Chicago.  As part of the ‘Uprise’ series we’ll be playing a show along side DJ ?estlove Saturday, April 23rd (We can only hope he may want to sit in on drums–fingers crossed!).  This event will be $10 before 11pm, $25 after.  The 3-show run will be continued on Saturday, May 21st and Saturday, June 25th with special guests, additions, and details TBA.  But you can bet we’ll bring the whole house for these Chi-town throw-downs!

The Shrine is named and ‘vibed’ after the club with the same name from Lagos, Nigeria–the club where Afrobeat music was developed by pioneer Fela Kuti in the 60s and 70s.  We’re hoping to help seed something of an Afrobeat ‘scene’ here in Chicago that stands on its own legs.  Help us by checking it out!

Chicago Afrobeat Project will be traveling on their bus powered by vegetable oil to Madison this weekend. They’ll play a special Friday night performance before Saturday’s Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Celebration. The Afrobeat Blog says “Chicago Afrobeat Project got their start playing parties in the Chicago loft scene and has been touring the country spreading their politically charged Afrobeat message for the last six years.” The band’s traditional afrobeat roots combined with experimental jazz and funk make their sound unique. You won’t want to miss their energetic performance!
