The Southern Illinoisan: “CAbP appealing to anyone who likes music and dancing”

Chicago Afrobeat Project: 9 p.m., Jan. 20, Hangar 9, Carbondale. A unique combination of rock, jazz and funk mixed with African drum beats. Cover charge: $4-$5. For more information, call (618) 549-0511.

The Chicago Afrobeat Project, a nine-member 70s funk- and jazz-infused ensemble, has developed a sound combining rock, jazz, funk and African percussion into a unique percussion-heavy sound that draws audiences from all walks of life — and gets them dancing.

Political activist Fela Kuti created the urban, contemporary sound of Afrobeat that was influenced by artists such as James Brown and Parliament. According to project member and trombone player Mark Thomson, Afrobeat is a “mix of American funk music and jazz originally developed in Africa, but it has more percussion.”

CAbP to Headline House of Blues

Chicago Afrobeat Project will be taking the stage at the prestigious House of Blues Chicago Saturday, July 9. Expect the works at we debut as the HOB’s headlining act. The performance will feature live breakdancers from Chicago’s own Brickheadz as well as many musical surprises.

Our good friends Free Space will kick off the night at 9 p.m., and we are very excited to have Abstract Giants join us immediately before we play. For those of you that were able to attend the sold out New Year’s show at The Note this past year, you will remember Abstract Giants as the amazingly talented live hip-hop group that rung in the new year.

Tickets are just $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Doors are at 7:30 and Free Space hits at 9:00. This is a special late night show at HOB, and the music will continue until 4:30 a.m. This is also a very rare “18 and up” show for CAbP, so we hope to see all of you out there who can’t experience us in a regular club setting.
